William "Marcellus" Boswell was born 06 May 1841 in Opelika, Pike County (now Lee County), Alabama. He was the son of Dr. Thomas Coke Boswell and Martha Herrin Boswell of Montgomery County, Alabama. Martha was born in Mississippi about 1819. Thomas passed away about 1848. The Boswells are of English descent. Martha married Julius Caesar Alford on 22 February 1852 in Montgomery County.
Boswell enlisted into the Confederate States Army, 1st Alabama Infantry on July 1861. On 20 January 1862 at Union Springs, Pike (now Bullock) County, Alabama he was placed in Company G, 1st Alabama Infantry Regiment. He was a Private making rank to Sergeant under Captain M. B. Locke and Colonel Steedman. He was transferred into Co. I (formed by consolidation of Companies G and D, 1st Alabama Infantry), making the rank of 1st Lieutenant by the close of war. He was discharged on 26 April 1865.
As a result of a stroke of apoplexy received on Sunday, 10 September 1911, Boswell died on Tuesday night, September 12th, in Elbridge, Onondaga County, New York, at the home of his sister-in-law, Mrs. William Taylor, where he and Mrs. Boswell had been visiting for the past few weeks.
The family notified Boswell's son, Judge C. A. Boswell, of the serious illness of his father. His son's urgent flight to New York was in vain. He was unable to reach his father's bedside before his father passed away. Truly he died in the service of the Lord, a faithful soldier to the last. He was seventy-two when he passed. His remains were transported to Lakeland, Polk County, Florida for burial.
