Portugese Royalty. Born Mafalda de Portugal the daughter of Sancho I of Portugal and Dulce of Aragon. In 1215, she married Enrique I, King of Castilla, but there is doubt that the marriage was ever consumated. It was, in any case, annulled the following year due to consanguinity. She returned to Portugal and retired to the convent at Arouca in 1222. She founded a hospice for pilgrims, and a hospital at Arouca as well as building a bridge over the river Tâmega. In 1616, wanting to return her body to Arouca as part of the process of her possible canonization, it was found not to have deteriorated, which generated a strong devotion to the Portuguese princess. Her cult was confirmed by Pope Pius VI in 1793. She was sister to saints Teresa and Sancha of Portugal.
