Darlene Washington, age 85, of Clarinda, Iowa departed this life on Tuesday, April 25, 2006, at Nebraska Methodist Hospital, Omaha, Nebraska.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 29, 2006 at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa with Rev. Tom Swafford and Rev. John Clark officiating.

Visitation with the family will be held 7-8 p.m., Friday, April 28, 2006 at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Clarinda Cemetery, Clarinda, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society. Walker-Merrick Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Darlene Vunita Washington was born April 29, 1920 in Clarinda, Iowa, to Clarence Baker and Symblean (Griggs) Baker. Darlene was a 1938 graduate of Clarinda High School. She was united in marriage November 25, 1941 to Ebert Washington. He preceded her in death March 10, 1992. Darlene worked for 29 years at Clarinda Mental Health Institute in the dietary department retiring in 1985 as the food production supervisor.

Darlene was baptized at an early age and continued her spiritual journey throughout her life. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church, Clarinda, Iowa; a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, RSVP, and volunteered in numerous community activities. She enjoyed going on tours and having coffee with her many friends.

Darlene was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ebert Washington; brothers, LeRoy Baker, Robert Baker, Vernon Baker, and Gerald Baker.

Survivors include her son, Vernon Washington (Lois) of Bailey, North Carolina; grandchildren, Danielle Brown (Carl), Shelli Barsky (Kevin), Angela Washington; great grandchildren, Terrell Frazer, Breyonna Brown; sister, Bertha Baker of Clarinda, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Mary Baker of Burlington, Iowa, Charlene Baker of Florida; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.
