Social Reformer. He was the enslaved leader behind the Jamaican Baptist War slave rebellion (also known as the Christmas Uprising), which started on Christmas Day in 1832 and lasted ten days. This was during the harvest of the sugar cane. He was a deacon at Burchell Baptist Church in Montego Bay. Before his hanging he stated, "I would rather die in yonder gallows, that live for a minute more in slavery." In 1972, the independent government of Jamaica declared him a National Hero of Jamaica and bestowed upon him the posthumous title of Right Excellent Samuel Sharpe
