Painter. He is one of Sweden's most prolific painters, earning an international fame with works in museums all over the world. Zorn was born in the small village of Mora in the province Dalarna, where he found much of the inspiration for his art with the peasants' folklore. In 1880, Zorn exhibited his watercolor titled "In Mourning" at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and it was well received. He had started studying at the Royal Academy in 1875, after leaving his home on his grandparents' farm. In October of 1885, he married Emma Lamm, who was from a wealthy Jewish merchant family. In 1887 he had switched exclusively from watercolors to oils. He moved to Paris in 1888 for commissions after his talent was recognized in France. While in Paris, he enjoyed the high society of the city and painted portraits of Antonin Proust, Proust's dancer mistress Rosita Mauri and the famous actor Coquelin Cade. The next year, he was knighted with the Legion of Honor and his works were on display at the Paris World's Fair. Besides France, he traveled during his career to the Balkans, Spain, Italy and to the United States for seven trips with extended stays. He produced the portraits of three United States Presidents: Grover Cleveland and William Taft in oil-on-canvas. Taft's portrait is displayed at the White House. He etched President Theodore Roosevelt's portrait in 1905, which is displayed at the Smithsonian Institute. Besides the three Presidents, he painted a host of other American politicians and Gilded Age figures. His subjects were Europe's nobility including the King of Sweden Oscar II's drawing, which is at the Metropolitan Museum in New York City. In 1896 Zorn moved back home to his native village of Mora. Though he had painted nudes en plein air before, he painted a collection of female nude bathers starting in 1900. With him donned in a tomato-red coat, his most famous of his seven self-portraits, "Self-Portrait in Red" was painted in 1915. Besides painting, he was a sculptor from childhood. In 1906 he had a four-room exhibit full of his work, including some sculptures, at Paul Durand-Ruel's gallery in France. He became wealthy during his successful career and collected many paintings, such as those of Rembrandt, which he donated to Swedish government. His most important pieces on display at National Museum of Fine Arts. After his death, he was worth the equivalent of $9 million in the 21st century, which he left to the Swedish government. His wife established the Zorn Museum in Mora, showing their rustic home.
