John Phyfe Jr. was the second of seven sons of John and Jane (Forbes) Phyfe. Both parents were born in Scotland. John's father, John Phyfe (alias Fife) came to New York from Scotland in 1783 with his parents and siblings, one of whom was Duncan Phyfe, the notable American furniture manufacturer (John Jr's. uncle). John's father was a grocer. John Jr. became a noteworthy 'Ivory Turner' after apprenticing with James Ruthven & Son, who were the great ivory and hardwood turners of their day. In due course, he went into business for himself as an Ivory Turner at 30 Barclay Street, where his father carried on the grocery business.
John Phyfe Jr. married Jane McNiesh (1800-1863), the daughter of John and Janet (Drysdale) McNiesh, immigrants from Scotland, on 23 April 1822 at New York City. John and Janet had eight children born at New York City: 1. Jane Eliza Phyfe (b. 1823; d. 1882), m. John Thomson; 2. Adeline Phyfe (b. 1825; d. 1858), m. Gurdon Burchard (1812-1894); 3. Jannette McNiesh Phyfe (b. 1824; d. 1901), m. Moses Ames Wheelock (1820-1878); 4. Helen Phyfe (b. 1828), 5. Agnes Phyfe (b. 1834), m. Henry M. Halsey (1834-); 6. John Mason Phyfe (b. 1836; d. 21 Apr 1863), 7. William Snodgrass Phyfe [twin] (b. 5 May 1840; d. 1916), m. 23 Sep 1869 at Manhattan, NY, Susan Moore (1849-1933); and 8. George Potts Phyfe [twin] (b. 5 May 1840; d. 1913).
John Phyfe Jr. died on 17 December 1872 at Tarrytown, New York and is buried in the New York City Marble Cemetery, Manhattan, New York County (Manhattan), New York, USA.
