World War I Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Sergeant, in the 47th Battalion, Queensland Australian Imperial Forces. At Dernancourt, France, March 28, 1918, Sergeant McDougall was on watch at a post for his unit when the Germans attacked. He picked up a Lewis gun, attacked two enemy machine-gun teams and killed their crews. He turned the captured machine guns on to the enemy killing several and when about fifty Germans had crossed the Australian-held railway, he turned his gun on them before they had time to establish themselves behind the battalion. When his ammunition was spent he seized a bayonet, charged, killing three men and an enemy officer who was just about to kill an Australian officer. He then used a Lewis gun on the enemy, killing many and forcing the surrender of the remaining thirty-three enemy. For extreme gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded Victoria Cross Medal.
