His brother was Stanley Robert McDougall VC
and they were sons of John Henry and Susannah Anne (nee Cate) McDougall.

Born Recherche, Tasmania. Son of the late John Henry and Susannah Anne (nee Cate) McDougall. An engine driver prior to enlisting in the Australian Imperial Force on 29 February 1916. He embarked from Hobart for overseas on 1 July 1916 aboard HMAT "Berrima" (A35). He was killed in action, aged 24 years.
