Indian Wars Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as Sergeant in Company B, 8th US Cavalry. In Arizona Territory from August to October 1868, Sergeant Phife as an advance scout for his troop was constantly in the saddle patrolling for hostile Apache Indians. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on July 24, 1869.
