Hugh was born in 1804 to David John and Catherine Astor Fairfield in Lancaster, PA. He married Maria Cobler on 24 Jan 1827 in Shreve, Wayne Co., OH. They were farmers in German, Fulton Co , Ohio and Senaca, Crawford Co, WI.
They raised eight children: Rossana, James, Elizabeth, Charlotte, Mary Ann, George, Catherine, and Cyrus Fairfield.
