American Military Officer. In 1803 as a 2nd Lieutenant he led a 65-man expedition to establish a military post at the future site of Fort Dearborn, now site of the city of Chicago. He raised the flag there August 17 1803. Later that year he was appointed to Corps of Artillerists, and became Assistant Military Agent to Fort Fayette, Pittsburgh in August 1805. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant in 1811 and then to Captain in 1812, he commanded a 1st Artillery Regiment. During the War of 1812 Swearingen was promoted to Quartermaster General of the US Army with the rank of Colonel. After the war he was honorably discharged from service. He died on his 82nd birthday in Chillocothe, Ohio.
