John Kerns, an old and highly respected resident of Woodford, died at the home of H.P. Larson of that place on Monday evening, Aug. 1, aged 78 years and 16 days. The deceased was born in the state of New York, but came west at an early age and lived in Illinois for a time and then came to Wisconsin and settled on the old homestead near Woodford, where he lived until the time of his death, with the exception of about ten years spent in California where he went with an overland caravan drawn by horses and oxen.
He never married but leaves one sister and two brothers. They are Mrs. Denure of Woodford, and Ed and Steve Denure of Cary, Ill. He was the first postmaster at Woodford when the office was established about twenty one years ago when there was nothing but farm homes in sight. He was an exemplary citizen, and one of his friends summed it up in these words: "He was the best fellow I ever knew, and he was a father of us all."
The funeral was held at the house yesterday at 10 o'clock, Rev. Hintz, pastor of the Woodford Methodist Church, conducting the services. The burial took place in the old cemetery at Argyle.
