Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served in the Civil War first as a Captain in the 2nd Missouri Volunteer Infantry, then as Lieutenant Colonel and commander of the 13th United States Colored Troops. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the war".
