Wife of Former Senator David Karnes of Omaha

She served on the Westside school board, Karnes was the first woman to lead the Omaha Airport Authority board, the appointed governing body that oversees the city's airports.

The daughter of an Omaha building contractor, Karnes graduated from Westside High School in 1967. She met her husband when both were students at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.

She had taught in the Lincoln school system and at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and worked on curriculum at Boys Town. She also worked in the early 1980s as an unpaid research assistant for a literacy program started by Barbara Bush, wife of then-Vice President George Bush.

The Karnes family drifted from the public eye with David Karnes' quick exit from the Senate after losing to Bob Kerrey in the 1988 election.

Karnes, a Republican, served less than two years in the Senate after being appointed in March 1987 by then-Governor Kay Orr to fill the seat left empty by Senator Ed Zorinsky's death.

Besides her husband, Liz Karnes is survived by the couple's daughters: Korey, Kalen, Kara, and Laurel.
