Four bushwhackers, believed to have been Charles Taylor, Arch Clements, Peyton Long, and James Bissett, called Dagley out of his fields, and shot him dead. Dagley had been a member of Capt. Garth's militia. The group then went to his house, and told his family they had killed him because he had belonged to a squad that had killed one Park Donovan, another bushwhacker, in a fight a year before.
