US Congressman. Elected as a Federalist to represent New Hampshire at-large in the Fifth and Sixth Congresses, he served from 1797 to 1800. Gordon was born near Boston, Massachusetts, and graduated from Harvard College in 1779. After private law study he was admitted to the bar in 1787 and settled as an attorney in Amherst, New Hampshire. He was a member of the State Senate in 1794 and 1795, and Solicitor of Hillsborough County from 1794 to 1801. During his time in the US House Gordon helped lead the 1798 impeachment proceedings against William Blount, US Senator from Tennessee, who was ultimately expelled; the case set a precedent in defining and limiting the disciplinary actions Congress could take against its members. In June 1800 Gordon resigned his Congressional seat to become Attorney General of New Hampshire, an office he held for the remainder of his life. He died during a visit to Boston and was buried in Amherst.
