U.S. Congressman. After graduating from Trinity College in June 1873, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1874 and proceeded to practice law in Wadesboro, North Carolina. He was Mayor of Wadesboro in 1875, a member of the North Carolina State House of Representatives in 1878 and served in the North Carolina State Senate in 1880. In 1895, he presented credentials as a Democratic Member-elect to the Fifty-fourth Congress and served until 1896. After leaving Congress, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
