Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served in the Civil War as a Private in Company C, 61st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery in the final Union assaults Petersburg, Virginia on April 2, 1865. His citation reads simply "Capture of flag of 7th Tennessee Infantry (C.S.A.)". Hid Medal of Honor was awarded to him on May 10, 1865. He was one of eight 61st Pennsylvania Infantry soldiers to be awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery during the Civil War (the others being 1st Lieutenant Charles H. Clausen, Corporal Joseph Fisher, Corporal John C. Matthews, , Captain George W. Mindil, Private Theodore Mitchell, Major Robert L. Orr, and Sergeant Sylvester D. Rhodes).
