George was a Berdan Sharpshooter with Company G, 1st Regiment U.S. Sharpshooters. Those of the company that wanted to continue fighting were transferred first to Company D, then Company A 2nd USSS when Company D mustered out, then to Company B, 36th Wisconsin infantry when the USSS was entirely disbanded. This man was wounded twice (2nd Bull Run and Locust Grove).
He enlisted initially for three years, and was one of those that joined in 1862. His contract went to 1865. So, when the boys of 1861 were done with their three years, the company disbanded. The men with a remaining contract were transferred to companies from the other states that mustered in after Company G, and then when those companies disbanded, all the Wisconsin men in the USSS were transferred to Company B of the 36th Wisconsin. His main service was with the USSS. THAT should have been on his headstone. He's not the only Company G guy with a 36th Wisconsin headstone.
