George's cremated remains were not initially taken after his death and were available at the Oregon State Hospital to be claimed by a relative. In 2015 George's grandnephew successfully completed the process to received the ashes. George is with family again.

George was born in Omaha in 1867 to Greta "Sophia" Fjelstad and Johan "John" August Ahmanson. George's mother was born in Denmark in 1831 and his father was born in Smaland, Sweden in 1827. Sophia met John Ahmanson while he was incarcerated in her father's jail for his belief in Mormonism and followed him upon his release to Copenhagen, Denmark where they were married in 1853. They immigrated to the US in 1856 with their infant son Jacob August (born in 1855). George's father, Dr. John Ahmanson, a homeopath, had a lucrative practice and also represented Douglas County in the Eighth Nebraska State Legislature (in 1871).

At the time of the 1880 census George lived in Omaha, Nebraska with his parents, his sister Charlotte "Lottie" Salome Ahmanson (born in 1871) and brother William Hayden Ahmanson (born in 1873). From 1881 to 1891 George was living with his parents and listed in the Omaha city directory as a printer.

George's father died in 1891. In the 1892 & 1893 directories of Omaha George was listed as living with his mother and working as a letter carrier. His mother died in 1894. That year, when he was 29, George married 22 year old Katie Hubman on 8/16/1894 in Omaha.

In 1921 & 1928 George was listed in the directory of Lane County, Oregon. Typically if a man was married his wife would be listed with him in the directory, but George was listed alone. During the 1930 census George lived in Veneta, Lane County, Oregon where he worked in a sawmill. He was single. In 1935 he lived in rural Lane County, Oregon and in the census of 1940 he was listed as widowed in Veneta, Oregon. He indicated no occupation.

On 11/9/1942, George was admitted to the Oregon State Hospital, a residential facility in Salem, Oregon for the treatment of people with mental illness. He was said to have "senile psychosis" which would be called dementia today. He died at the state institution 2 1/2 years later of "senile exhaustion" at the age of 78. Hospital records indicated he was a widower.

His older brother Jacob was a tinsmith. He died in 1921 and was buried in Omaha. His FAG memorial is # 30993250. His brother William was in the insurance business and died in 1925 in Omaha. His FAG memorial is 26791416. William's son (George's nephew) was Howard F. Ahmanson, Sr. who became famous as a financier and philanthropist in Los Angeles and owned the largest savings and loan business in the United States. Howard's FAG memorial is # 8136. Howard died in 1968. George's sister Lottie (Ahmanson) Michelsen died in 1955 in Los Angeles.

On 8/1/2016 his grand nephew and family attended a service conducted by Fr. Tom Merkel, S.J. and representatives from Creighton University and Creighton Law School. George was laid to rest beside his parents.
