Born in Smaland, Sweden. Between the ages of 6-18 was taken to live on a farm where he became an expert bookbinder. In 1849 he moved to Denmark where he was recruited by Mormons whom sent him to Norway, where he was incarcerated for his beliefs. While in jail he met and fell in love with the jailer's daughter, and they were married in Copenhagen in 1853. In 1856 Johan, his wife and infant son came to the US as immigrants landing in New York City and then traveling to Iowa City by train. Johan was in charge of a group of settlers to travel to Salt Lake City on the Mormon trail arriving in November 1856. Over the next two years Johan became disenchanted with the Mormons and headed east to Missouri in the spring of 1857. The family came to Omaha in 1859 where Johan was a hardware merchant until 1867 and then ran a grocery store and a Scandinavian Newspaper. He spent time in Chicago to study homeopatic medicine, which he practiced in Omaha until his death.
