Athlete. Olympic Gold Medallist. He took up athletics seriously only after graduating from Oxford and after success in the 1930 Empire Games he was a strong contender for a medal at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics. In the 800 metres final the Canadian Phil Edwards stormed to the front and took a lead of around twenty metres. However he paid the penalty for the blistering pace and faded quickly as Hampson cruised past him to win in a new World Record of 1.49.7. Alex Wilson of Canada was second with Edwards back in third. Hampson also won a silver medal as part of the Great Britain 4 x 400 metres relay team. After the Olympics he became a AAA coach. During the Second World War he served in the RAF.
