Michael Cryder, Sr., with his wife, and seven sons, migrated from Huntington County, Pennsylvania, in the year 1796. He came down the Ohio River on a flatbed to the mouth of the Scioto and thence on a keelboat pushed up the Scioto to Chillicothe. There he remained a few months, during which he put up a cabin on the east bank of the river, west of Hopetown, into which he moved. He entered all of Section 6 and the land west of it to the river, compromising some 1,400 acres. He lived in the cabin on the river, a few years, then erected a two-story, hewed log house, where he died in 1816. He was a native of Pennsylvania, and served as commissary in the Revolution War. His wife Sarah died in 1817. They raised a family of eight sons and one daughter.
