After graduation from Reno High School and Reno Business College, Evelyn began employment as a bookkeeper at the Durham Chevrolet, Brown Motors, and then for Doctors Palmer and Scott. During her employment at Durham Chevrolet, she met and married Joe Wells, the founder of Wells Cargo, Inc. This union produced the joy of her life, Dawn, who was born on her mother's birthday. While living in Reno, Evelyn was a member of the Century Club, Eastern Star, and the First Baptist Church.
She was an enthusiastic and well-appreciated Brownie Leader. After moving to Los Angeles in 1966, she worked at the Juvenile Detention Center for LA County until her retirement in 1977. She moved to Nashville, TN and then to Redington Shores, FL before returning to Los Angeles in 1994 to assist Dawn in creating and writing the "Mary Ann's Gilligan
Island Cookbook". Evelyn is best remembered for her love of animals and her outstanding cooking and gardening skills. She retained her sharp wit, her interest in the community and the world until the end, casting her last vote in the November 2004 election. Evelyn died of natural causes on December 16, 2004, at the age of 93, in Burbank, CA, with her daughter at her side.
She returned to her roots to be buried at Mountain View Cemetery
in Reno. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 21, 2004 from 10 am to time of service at 2 pm at the Mountain View Mortuary, followed by interment at Mountain View Cemetery.
