Joseph Wesley Wells was born on 7 June 1911 in Stockton, San Joaquin County, California. His parents were Frank Clinton Wells and Maude L. Avery. Then he moved to Reno where he became the owner and president of a shipping company called "Wells Cargo". In Reno, on 22 September, 1934, he married Evelyn Steinbrenner [1911-2004], and two years later they had a daughter, Dawn Wells, born on 18 October, 1938. She was their only child. Years later, Joe became the President of the Thunderbird Hotel and Casino. He passed away on 18 May, 1967, in Las Vegas, and was buried in the Palm Downtown Cemetery in Las Vegas, Clark County, Nevada.
