Physician. Ryosai Ko was a medical scientist in the Edo period in Japan, renowned ophthalmologist. He was adopted by an ophthalmologist, Takanishiki Kuni, shortly after birth. He learned "honsogaku," medical science (mainly ophthalmology) from his adoptive father. At the age of 19, he moved to Nagasaki to study Western medicine. Ko was trained in European medical traditions and practices by Philipp Franz von Siebold
