He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery at Calamba, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on July 26, 1899. His citation reads "Swam the San Juan River in the face of the enemy's fire and drove him from his entrenchment's". His Medal of Honor was awarded to him on March 8, 1902.
