In 1871, he resigned his commission in the United States Army. He and his second wife, Louisa Butler were the parents of two children: William Rathburn Bartlett and Gretchen Bartlett, who was listed as Mrs. Gretchen Stodt in the obituary of her brother.

The Encyclopedia of Frontier Biography states that it is thought he might be the Edward Bartlett who married Sarah Winnemucca (1844-1891), a member of the Paiute tribe of western Nevada. They separated after a year and she then married a member of her tribe.
