Actor. Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, he was a versatile character actor who appeared in motion pictures and television for over seven decades. In 1919, he began his career as a stage performer and made his first silent film "The North Winds Malice" in 1920. His many movie credits included "Liliom" (1930), "The Three Musketeers" (1935), "Holiday Inn" (1942), "Mirage" (1966) and "The Ultimate Solution of Grace Quigley" (1984). Also during this period, he was appointed president of the American National Theatre and Academy. For television, he appeared on "Masterpiece Playhouse", "The Colgate Comedy Hour", "Tales of Tomorrow", "Playhouse 90" and "East Side, West Side". He died of a heart attack.
