Andreas Kalmback was born in Herzogweiler, Germany in 1795. In 1832, he traveled with his wife, Elizabeth (Zukschwert) Kalmback and their seven children Elizabeth, Rosina, Anna, John, Andrew, Christina and Frederick to America. They traveled across the country and settled in Tuscarawas, Coshocton County, Ohio. Here they had two more children: Katherine and Adam. Sometime between 1853-54, he moved his family to Indiana where they made their home in the little town of Arney, located in Jefferson Township of the county of Owen. Here he farmed until his death in 1879.

**It is interesting to note that somewhere along the way the spelling of his surname went from Kalmback to Colenbaugh. No one knows how or why this happened. It is my opinion that they may have had limited English so the people who kept records spelled the name the way it sounded to them then somehow the spelling stuck. When researching the history of Andreas, I have found that his decedents use two spellings of the last name. Both "Colenbaugh" and "Collenbaugh" are used.**

**It is also interesting to note that he died on August 5, 1879 but his stone reads ‘died: October 5, 1879.'**

Taken from the August 21, 1879 Owen County Journal:

Mr. Colenbaugh, an old resident of Jefferson Township, died on the 2nd inst. One by one the old citizens are passing away.
