For eleven seasons (1969 to 1979), he played at the tackle and guard positions in the National Football League with the Chicago Bears, Cincinnati Bengals and Philadelphia Eagles. Born Rufus Lee Mayes, he was raided in Ohio where he attended Macomber-Whitney High School and later played collegiate football at Ohio State University. While with the Buckeyes, he experienced a national championship as Ohio State defeated USC in the Rose Bowl Game in 1969. Selected by the Chicago Bears during the 1st round of the 1969 NFL Draft, he totaled 139 career regular season games. After retiring from football, he worked as a computer software salesman with Hewlett-Packard. He died of complications from bacterial meningitis.
