Death of William Cummings
Last Saturday death came to the relief of William Cummings, who has been a great sufferer from cancer of the stomach for several months.
Deceased was about 75 years old and was a peaceful upright farmer living in the town of Darien for many years, and where he raised a family of five sons and one daughter, all of whom have grown up to be useful and honored citizens. The funeral was attended on Monday morning from St. Andrew's church, Rev. Joe Smith preaching the sermon. The procession to the church was one of the longest ever seen in our streets, showing in what high esteem Mr. Cummings was held.

Obituary
William Cummings
After an illness of several months William Cummings, of Darien, passed quietly away at his home four miles west of Delavan at 11:55am, August 22, 1896, aged 72 years and 8 days. The funeral services were held at St Andrew's church of Delavan, Aug 24. The Rev J. G. Smith officiating. Internment at St. Andrew's Cemetery.
William Cummings was born August 14, 1824, in Timaho, a little hamlet in Queen's County, Ireland, and there spent his boyhood days coming to this country in 1843. He landed in Philadelphia August 14, but continued his journey to Jacobston, Burlington County, New Jersey, where he had a sister living, remaining in that vicinity for the following 14 years. In the Spring of 1857 he came to the village of Delavan in which vicinity he has resided. He there met Miss Elizabeth Carey whom he married the following February. She still survives him. To that union were born nine children, seven sons and two daughters, all of whom are living but Christopher, who died in infancy.
Before death cast it's shadow over the household, the father had the pleasure of seeing all the members of his family gathered at the old home, each so solicitous for his welfare and anxious to preserve the life they loved so well. He left to mourn him the loving wife and eight children, Richard, John, William and Henry, of Chicago: James, Charley, Lizzie and Mrs. Charles Gosso, of this vicinity.
During his long illness he was ever patient, putting his entire trust in Him who dooth all things well, and without a complaint awaited the final summons that would forever sever his relations with all things earthly. By leading a pure, untarnished life he won the friendship and respect of all who knew him, and died as he believed - honored and respected.

William purchased a 11 x 24ft burial lot at St Andrew's Cemetery in 1883 for $10.
