A survivor of the Armenian Genocide of 1915, her parents Arshag and Varteni Der Avedisian were killed during it. Their father was likely killed with the rest of the men of the village, while the women and children were taken on a death march into the Syrian desert. At some point on it their mother was attacked by a river bank and Dekranouhi and her two young sisters had to cross the river, leaving their mother behind. Dekranouhi and her sisters survived the march and lived in an orphanage after the genocide, likely in the the Middle East. Later the three sisters were brought to America under a different name (Sherinian) by a relative who pretended to be their father to facilitate them being allowed into the country. They settled with relatives in Camden and worked at the Campbell's Soup factory. Dekranouhi married Boghos Ajdaharian in 1930 in Philadelphia. They had three children: Stephen, Dorothy, and Aram. She was the grandmother of 4 and a happy and jovial person, despite the horrors she witnessed. Her exact birthdate was not known and different dates are given in records.
