She was the wife of Arshag Der Avedisian. He was killed in the Armenian Genocide of 1915 and Varteni and her three daughters were deported like most of the Armenian population of the region. These deportations were death marches in which numerous people fell victim to exposure, disease, and murder. By a riverside along the way, Varteni was attacked and told her young daughters to run. The three girls escaped and eventually were rescued into an orphanage, but their mother was never seen again and presumably died or had been killed, though it is impossible to know for certain.
