Looking for a new life in a new land, Jerome moved to Oak Harbor, Washington in 1873, becoming one of its early pioneers.
In addition to farming and business, Jerome was the first postmaster of the town, and when the town became incorporated in 1915, he was elected as its first mayor. He also served as county commissioner for several years and served on the school board in the early years.
