Wife and Mother, Hazel Bowles Avery, 90, died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, at Wakefield Rehabilitation Center in Wakefield. Mrs. Avery was born Jan. 14, 1914, at Lathrop, Mo., the daughter of Charles and Ada (Blackwood) Bowles. She grew up in Junction City. She attended Park College in Kansas City and graduated from Northeast Missouri State Teachers College in Kirksville. She taught music in Wakefield where she met William Avery. They were married in 1940 in Kansas City. They lived in the Washngton D.C. area while William served five terms in Congress. They lived in Topeka during William's term as Governor of Kansas. She undertook direction of the first remodeling of Cedar Crest, the Kansas governor's mansion and organized the annual Easter egg hunt. They lived in Wichita before returning to Bethesda, Md. where William worked for the Department of the Interior. Following retirement, the Averys returned to Wakefield. Survivors include her husband, William Avery of Wakefield; two sons, William Avery Jr. of Indianapolis, Ind. and Brad Avery of Topeka; two daughters, Barbara Avery of New Orleans,La. and Sue Avery of Winchester, Md.; eight grandchildren;and four great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Wakefield. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Wakefield United Methodist Church or the Wakefield Museum in care of the funeral home.
