OBITUARY

ARTHUR HOCH DIES FRIDAY AFTER MANY MONTHS ILL HEALTH

Arthur Hoch, well known farmer living southeast of Alta Vista, died at his home Friday afternoon after an extended period of failing health. He had been unconscious since a stroke a week or so previous, and while his death was not unexpected, nevertheless his passing was the cause of sincere sorrow for Mr. Hoch was one of the mainstays of his community.

He took an active part in community enterprises. He was an influential member of the Farmers Union, having served on the board of directors until the last couple years, served several terms and was Republican precinct committeman of Rock Creek precinct at the time of his death, was active in the work of the Emmanuel Methodist church, and a good friend and neighbor in general. Quiet and soft spoken, Mr. Hoch was firm in his convictions but had the faculty of expressing his opinions in a manner that did not make him an enemy of those who disagreed with him.

Funderal services were held Sunday afternoon from the Emmanuel church, and burial was made in the Prairie View cemetery adjoining. Rev. Allberry conducted the service and read the following obituary.

Arthur Hoch was born Dec. 22, 1877, in Brighton, Iowa. In 1882 he came with his parents to Wabaunsee county, Kansas. He was baptized when five years old. On June 20, 1915, he united with the Emmanuel Methodist church.

He was married to Sarah Falter on August 7, 1901. To this union were born six children; a daughter who died in infancy, Harry H. of Dwight, Mrs. Leola Grundeitz of Yoder, Colo.; Clarence L. of Adams, Mass.; Harvey E. of Emporia, and Mrs. Harold Rollf of Alta Vista.

In addition to his wife and five children, four grandchildren and two sisters, Anna Schroeder and Mary Eberle, survive.

After a critical illness of eleven days duration, his present life of 63 years, 8 months and 8 days was closed.

Mr. Hoch was a man of high principles of moral living, undergirded by a confident religious trust in his Creator; a devoted husband and guiding father. His active interest in church, school and community life brought highest benefits. His careful advice sought by any who deserved help was always dependable. He loved the simple virtues of honesty, loyalty, reverence and obedience. His life was lived highly so that everyone was glad to see him coming, grieved to see his going.
