Rites Held Thursday, Feb. 25, For Curt Hammill
Funeral services were held in the Congregational Church in Ree Heights Thursday afternoon for Curtis Avery Hammill who died Feb. 25 at Prairie Center at the age of 86 years, six months and eight days. Interment was in the Morningside Cemetery, Ree Heights.
Active pallbearers were Delton Blake, Kent and Bruce Hammill, Duane Mitchell, Gary Hartman and Steven Ames, grandsons and grand sons-in-law of the deceased. Honorary pallbearers were James Lebban, Hugh Gardner, Ed Hadler, Orville Hill, Aaron Burge, Joe Blaseg, Lloyd Phinney, Howard Beck, Alfred Bouren, George Voelker, Erwin Bauer and Charles Beranek.
Curtis Avery Hammill, son of Elisha Avery and Nancy Adeline Hammill, was born Sept. 14, 1878, in Defiance, Ohio. He migrated to Dakota Territory, Hand county with his parents and nine brothers and sisters in March of 1883. They homesteaded on a pre-emption filed by his father. Hammill had lived the entire past 82 years in Hand county.
Curt, as he was known to many people, had been active his entire life until suffering a stroke December 9, 1964. He had had many occupations in his life: farming, black smith shop, garage and filling station operator, and was caretaker of the City Auditorium up until the time of his illness.
He is survived by his widow; two daughters: Mrs. Mabel Blake, Pierre; and Mrs. Sheldon (Ethel) Mitchell Mundelein, Ill.; two sons: Frank and Roy of Ree Heights; one brother: Murlen, Mariposa, Calif.; one sister: Mrs. Winnie Schmidt, Pasadena, Calif.; one half-brother: Everett, Billings, Mont.; two half-sisters: Mrs. Walter (Mae) Sanger, Redfield: and Mrs. Guy (Cora) Townsend, Racine, Wisc.; eight grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
