Egyptian Pharaoh. He came to the throne in approximately 2613 BC and was the first Pharaoh of Egypt's Fourth Dynasty. He ruled for about thirty years and sent military expeditions to Libya and Nubia in order to seize building materials and prisoners to work on his building projects. Unusually, he left behind two huge pyramids, the first, the so called "Bent Pyramid", represents the first move away from the step pyramid design of earlier tombs towards the more familiar smooth sided structures built by his successors. Due to the instability resulting from the original 55 degree slope, the pyramid's sides were modified to a gentler 45 degree angle in its upper layers, resulting in its distinctive outline and nick name. When he died in about 2589 BC he was more likely to have been buried in his second tomb, the "Red Pyramid" which was the first true pyramid to be built in Egypt and which is second in size only to the great pyramid of Cheops.
