Amelia was the daughter of Robert (1826-1889) & Ernestine "Anna" Bernhagen (1827-1887).

Amelia (Emilia) Steffen was a contrary old girl - very bigoted. Her pastor was "God". No one could (or would) contradict her. According to Aunt Anne, Amelia was also stubborn. She considered herself "high class Lutheran". (From her death location at Wunders Cemetery, it would appear that she may have been a part of the congregation at either First St. Paul's Evangelical Church or First Immanuel Luther Church, both partners in operation of the Wunders Cemetery. Amelia felt her husband Wilhelm, "our Pa", belonged to all of the family & nobody else. Their son, William Emil was always knows as "William" & his brother Richard ("Doc" Steffen) was known to her as "The Doctor".... Aunt Anne says "don't forget that!"

Ameila was good with the grandkids and was reported to have been an elegant cook. When her son, "Doc" got married, Amelia was unhappy. She always thought "her baby" was never going to get married... He had married a nurse. Apparently she (the nurse) later fell on a floor and hit her head, losing a pregnancy in the process. We have show that they had son (Richard George Steffen) that died at "8 months 27 days", but it's not now known if that meant "in utero", as the story goes. Richard George Steffen is buried with his grandparents (Wilhelm & Amelia) at Wunder's Cemetery in Chicago.
