He legitimised his claim to the throne with his marriage to the daughter of his predecessor, Unas and his accession bought about the end of a period of unrest that had broken out on Unas' death. He secured the allegiance of the powerful nobility by marrying his daughter to the Vizier Meruka. He was unable to completely secure his position, however, because in 2333 BC, after ruling for twelve years, he was murdered by his bodyguard. The assassination may have been ordered by Usekare, who is believed to have briefly succeeded him before Teti's son, Pepi I, claimed the throne a year later. His Pyramid at Saqqara yielded a basalt sarcophagus and a wooden coffin, but his body was never found.
