Egyptian Pharaoh. He ruled Egypt for approximately seven years during the Third Dynasty, his reign dating from between 2649 BC until 2643 BC. He was virtually unknown to Egyptologists until the discovery of his pyramid in 1951, although a relief found in Sinai suggests he undertook military activity in that region. His tomb, popularly known as the "Buried Pyramid" represents the base of an unfinished step pyramid that was intended to be even larger that of his predecessor, Djoser. A unique sarcophagus, carved from a single block of alabaster, was found inside and opened before an audience of scholars and journalists, but proved to be empty.
