Egyptian Pharaoh. He came to the throne in 690 BC and was one of the so-called "Nubian" Pharaohs who ruled Egypt in the 25th Dynasty. He is identified by many historians as being the Ethiopian king Tirhakah, who, according to The Bible, prevented Sennacherib from destroying Jerusalem. He undertook many building projects, including rebuilding the temple at Kawa, near modern Dongola and the restoration of the Temple of Amun at Karnak. He also ordered new buildings at Medinet Habu. During his reign Egypt was finally overrun by Assyria, Tarharqa initially repelled the invaders, but in 671 BC they captured and destroyed Memphis, forcing him to flee to the south and installing Necho I as king at Sais. He continued to resist the Assyrians while in exile and encouraged a number of revolts before finally being defeated by Assurbanipal and forced to return to his Nubian homeland. He died in Nubia, modern Sudan, in 664 BC after ruling Egypt for twenty-six years.
