Excerpt from the Diary of Francis Ellingwood Abbot:

March 20, 1886

I intended today to go to Beverly, and find some sexton who would attend to Mother's lot faithfully—the last one has grievously broken faith with me: the lot is still stripped of its sod, though I have spent over $40.00 in paying to have it attended to. But last night it snowed, and the weather is rainy; so I had to postpone my journey. Mother, I do not forget my pledge to you: your beloved "God's Acre" is my heart's care, and it shall be till I die. I am glad it was I that placed the stone at the head of your last resting-place, without aid from the rest of your children: they too love you, but it is your "little Saxon boy" who remembers also.

Larcom-Abbot plot, Central Cemetery, Beverly, MA, October 24, 2015. Text and inspiration courtesy of E.P. Walker.

Excerpt from the Diary of Francis Ellingwood Abbot:

April 9, 1886

This forenoon I went to Boston, and took the 10:45 train to Beverly, —having said nothing of my intention to anyone. I happened to meet Mr. Samuel Torrey, who alighted from his buggy, to shake hands, I asked him if he knew the Unitarian sexton; he mentioned his name, Heron, and he said he lived opposite the Dane Street church. Here I tried to find him, but no one was at the house. I therefore went to Samuel A. Gentlee, the Baptist sexton; and, after mildly blaming him for last year's neglect, asked him if I depend on his faithfully attending to Mother's lot at once. He protested he would do it first thing, and promised to have it all done by May 15. He is to sod the whole afresh grade it, manure it, trim the hedge, and plant a healthy maple tree in the southeast corner and a couple of white rose bushes, according to my precise directions. Leaving him, I visited the dear spot, and stayed till it was time to take the 2:05 P.M. train home.

Editor's Note: The "healthy maple tree" was cut down about June 22, 2015, having served Frank's wishes for 129 years. The swirled maple was about 140 years old. The scar to the right of the stone with the metal plaque is where the tree stood until this summer.

Recounts through letters, diary entries and photographs the story of Abbot's life and incredible life-long love affair with his wife, Katy.

Includes details of Abbot's inter-action with leading thinkers of his day including Emerson, Darwin and Thoreau (in whose mother's home Abbot boarded while teaching in Concord and often shared the table with Henry David Thoreau at meals.)

Also details Abbot's thoughts and preparations leading up to the taking of his own life in 1903 on the tenth anniversary of his wife's death on her grave in Central Cemetery, Beverly, MA.

Finding aid: If on foot, enter through Hale St. gate. Proceed straight up the hill to a set of stairs. Larcom-Abbot plot is 110 paces from the base of the hill. If in automobile, turn left at Hale St. entrance and proceed up the hill past the large pine. Plot is on the right near the single tree on the ridge.
