Governor of South Carolina. Wilson Harvey received national recognition serving as the 94th Governor of South Carolina from May 20, 1922, to January 16, 1923. He decided, as a sixteen-year-old, to leave formal schooling, taking a job with the Charleston city newspaper, "The Post & Courier." After almost five years he left that position to take employment at another newspaper, "The World & Budget." In 1894 he helped to organize Enterprise Bank of Charleston and eventually, would become the bank's president in 1904. His public service would begin in 1904, when he became a member of the Charleston Board of Alderman. In 1910 he was Mayor Pro Tempore of Charleston. He would hold other public positions until he decided to become a Democratic Party candidate for Lieutenant Governor, being elected to this position in 1921. In 1922, when Governor Robert Cooper resigned to accept a federal position, he, as lieutenant governor, would fill the vacancy of Governor of South Carolina. He would only serve as Governor for eight months, but during that time pushed for construction of concrete highways and introduced standards of education into the state school system. Harvey declined to stand for re-election. In 1923 he declared bankruptcy after the Enterprise Bank failed. In 1924 he was tried and acquitted on charges of fraud for continuing to accept deposits after he knew of the bank's pending failure. When his term of Governor was concluded, he removed to the private sector where he would become agent for Carolina Life Insurance Company in Greenville. Eventually in 1934, he would be the state's manager of this insurance company, then being transferred to Florida, where he died. He married and had three children with his first wife. As a widower, he remarried. He served in the South Carolina National Guard at the rank of major.
