Roman Emperor. He was born circa AD 320 and was raised as a Christian by his father, the Emperor Constantine. He was made a Caesar with his two brothers in AD 333, and, after the death of their father in AD 337 they divided the empire between themselves and were declared "Augusti" by the army. He had control of Italy, Africa, Illyricum, Macedonia and Achaea, and soon after coming to power he won a victory over the Sarmatians. In AD 340 he defeated his Brother Constantine II's attempt to seize control of his territory, and absorbed his lands into his own following the latter's death in battle. In his later years he attempted to raise money by selling government posts, and also allowed his favorites to oppress his subjects. Like his father he promoted Christianity and banned pagan sacrifices. He was murdered in AD 350 on the orders of Magnentius, who had declared himself Emperor in Gaul.
