He was killed in an accident while in his carriage when a train frightened his horse.

He was the founder and president of the pioneering South Carolina Canal and Rail Road Company.

Born in County Antrim, Ireland, he immigrated to Charleston, South Carolina at age 10. He married Henrietta Watt in 1801. They raised two children, living in 456 King Street from 1807 until his death in 1831.
