Civil War Union veteran; he enlisted as a Sergeant with Company H of the 14th Indiana Infantry on July 6, 1861 and served until he mujstered out on Sep. 24, 1861. He then enlisted as a Private in Company I, 19th Indiana Infantry on March 12, 1862. This regiment was part of the famed Iron Brigade of the West, or "Black Hats Brigade." During his military service, he was promoted to Corporal. He was reported as missing in action at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 1, 1863, but later returned to his unit.
