Roman Catholic Cardinal. Barcelona born Enrique Pla y Deniel entered the local seminary before attending the Pontifical Gregorian University and the Angelicum in Rome, where he was also ordained priest on July 25, 1900. Performing pastoral ministry in Barcelona while serving as faculty member of the local seminary and director of the reviews "El Social", "Revista Social" and "Revista Eclesiástica", he was soon named canon of the cathedral chapter, a post which he held until 1918, when he was appointed bishop of the diocese of Ávila by Pope Benedict XV. He received his episcopal consecration on June 8 of the following year inside the cathedral of Barcelona, from Msgr. Francesco Ragonesi, apostolic nuncio in Spain. Transferred to see of Salamanca on January 28, 1935 following the death of Msgr. Francisco Frutos Valiente, the Bishop strongly supported National Movement of Generalissimo Francisco Franco during the Spanish Civil War, such that during the named conflict, he offered Franco his episcopal residence as headquarters and later presided over the marriage of his daughter María. Following the demise of Cardinal Isidro Gomá y Tomás, he was promoted to the metropolitan and primatial see of Toledo, becoming thus primate of Spain on October 3, 1941. Pope Pius XII created him cardinal priest with the title of San Pietro in Montorio in the consistory of February 18, 1946. Member of the Board of Presidency of the Second Vatican Council, he participated in the conclaves of 1958 and 1963 which elected Popes John XXIII and Paul VI to the Papacy. Already well advanced in age, he was taken ill in the last conclave and the newly elected Pontiff dropped by to visit him the day after his election. The Cardinal eventually succumbed to cerebral embolism in Toledo on July 5, 1968 at ninety one years of age.
