He served as a Corporal in the United States Army in Company B, 5th US Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action at Cedar Creek, etc., Montana during October 1876 and January 8, 1877. His citation reads "Gallantry in action." He also has a cenotaph at Ft. Gibson National Cemetery in Ft. Gibson, Oklahoma.
